stretched penile skin

About two months ago I was prescribed clotrimazole and betamethasone cream for a fungal infection or mild eczema.  I used this cream for two weeks and then the determatoligist discontinued the use because it could cause skin stretching etc....  I then had  re-check with the determatolgist  and she said that she didn't think any stretching of the shaft skin occurred.  Although i have noticed the shaft skin has become more loose and seems to roll up to the penis head as I sit down.  It is really uncomfortable.  I have also noticed erectile issues.  I do not have an erection as spontaneous as I once did.  Is there anything i guy can do for this, to possibly restore the elasticity.  Also had discoloration of the skin due to using this cream.  Is that permanent????

Hi,

Discontinuation of the use of the steroid can result in a reversal of the laxity (if induced by the steroid) to some extent. Reversal depends on your skin's response after discontinuation of the medication and may not be to the state which was present prior to the use of the steroid. This reversal may extend to several months.

Do check whether the fungal infection has resolved and if it has not, then start local application of an antifungal ointment WITHOUT any steroid in it. You can consult a dermatologist for further guidance. For persistent fungal infections, oral antifungal agents may be prescribed.

Thanks for the info Dr. Smith...  Is there any possibility of the penile skin to tighten up over time.  I discontinued this steroid over a month ago and still no changes???

hi,

A fungal infection would have caused some amount of discoloration of the skin, but steroid use can cause alterations in skin color especially if the area is exposed to the sun. As this seems to be an unlikely cause for the discoloration, the problem could be due to the infection.

Steroids cause loosening of the skin and have been prescribed for topical use in reducing or relieving symptoms of phimosis (where the foreskin remains tight around the glans).

Other side effects of steroid use include development of telangiectasia which is a condition where there is prominence of the blood vessels in the skin. This causes an unsightly change in skin appearance and is a reason why steroids are not prescribed for longer topical use.

Any steroid will be absorbed systemically even if there is only topical application. If you have discontinued steroid use, just give your body time to revert to normal.
The discoloration will also subside over time.

Do keep us posted.
