what could be the problem?

Hi, I am not sure if it is an infection or what.  My mother is hosptialized and is not doing well at all due to alcohol abuse.  She is complaining she cannot pee.  Does anyone know what causes this or why?  thanks.

Hi,

I'm not sure but it could be possible that the nervous system is effected.
I'm no drinker at all but was diagnosed as having a neurogenic bladder. This was diagnosed in 1996 after I was unable to urinate without a catheter. I have a neurological condition that effects the nerves in the bladder sphyncters.

Over use of alcohol can also effect the nervous system. Another thing that could be possible is that due to drinking lots the bladder has been stretched over time. This could also give a problem of incomplete voiding. I used to have a friend who used to be an alcoholic, he mentioned that over time he had a much larger bladder capacity than average people.

These are just some suggestions, only a urologist might be able to tell why this is taking place.

All the best.

Ron

My Grandmother was a heavy drinker at least. I never saw her drunk though, she would go up to 3 bottles of whisky a week. At 70 years old one kidney was taken out. Eventually the other kidney failed at 83 years old and we lost her. She was dearly loved. I don't know the answer to being able to pee or not though as it was about 25 years ago now. In my thoughts, Nicky
