I know what you're going through. What I've learned through the years is this. First of all, drink a lot of cold water through the day. Especially drink a big glass of cold water right before you eat. (Some say the cold shrinks the stomach but I think it makes you feel full quicker.) Secondly, eat the healthiest choices available. For me, it is limiting or eliminating carbohydrates. For others, it is a caloric intake thing. Eating healthier choices is a big step in the right direction. Another rule of thumb when it comes to portion sizes is, don't eat anything bigger than the size of your fist. (Ball your fist up, like you are making a fist. Look at the knuckles... the distance around that part of your fist is a good portion size.) So, lots of water, eat only healthy choices and nothing larger than the size of your fist.
