Losing weight on SlimFast Diet and Shakes

Hello board.

I just wanted to give a thumbs up to SlimFast and encourage others.  The new plan is working out well for me.  It is two shakes a day, three 100-calorie your-own snacks, and a 500 calorie your-own sensible dinner.  The goal is a two pound loss per week.

I was a little over 40 pounds overweight from a lot of overeating from boredom and stress.  I've been using SlimFast since March, and I've lost 15 pounds so far.  I plan on going all the way and losing it all, so it will be a few more months.  It would have more this far, but there were some weeks where my weight stayed the same and I must have been eating too much or too high of calorie snacks then.  It works pretty good for me.  I like the taste of the shakes even after all this time.  I find chocolate to taste the best.  I'm not always strict about it, I'll skip a shake and have breakfast OR lunch out at a restaurant sometimes instead of a shake, and all in all in usually balances out and I lose the two pounds a week.  I try to keep fruits, cheese, etc. for healthy snacks.  I found it helpful to figure out the portions that make a 100 calorie snack.

This diet has been a wonderful learning experience, I now pay better attention to myself and what I eat than before.  And it keeps me more regular to a routine, eating on a regular basis.  Especially important is that I'm learning about portions and calories, and staying hunger free.  I always thought I'd have to skip food or starve to lose weight, but I don't go hungry on this diet.  I love that.  The shakes are amazing.  They fill me up for hours, no hunger pangs, loaded with vitamins and minerals, they surprisingly fill me up more than cereal or toast ever did, those used to leave me hungry looking for more food.  I think the high protein in the shakes helps with that, too.  One thing that really appeals to me is that often I don't have the appetite or time to have a meal for breakfast or lunch, so this is quick and not much to consume.  It's great also for teaching temperance and self-control.  I'm so happy to see I can follow a diet and find success.

My only complaint was that for some weeks in the start of this diet, I had awful symptoms, of just feeling icky, almost flu like.  I think it was my body adjusting to fluids instead of solids for most meals.  But it all disappeared after a few weeks.  I was really heading for throwing in the towel, it was so bad, but thankfully I perservered as it all cleared up.

I wish everyone success on their plans for weight loss or gain.  And I hope you learn more about yourself, too.  And learn healthy foods, and gain greater temperance and self-control.

God bless you.

I agree with Barb135. Before I got married over 7 years ago I wanted to drop some weigh quick so that I could look good in a dress and I did the slimfast and lost 30 pounds in a month. And guess what? I gained it all back and then some. Now i have lost 40 pounds since October but I did it by changing my lifestyle overall. Not just my eating habits but my activity levels also.

Just think about it, your not going to be on slim fast forever, then what are you going to do after? Most people go back to their old life style habits after an extreme diet. Every person is different, but I have found its much easier to change my lifestyle. And slim fast is not the most nutritious thing to eat either, it has a lot of sugar in it. I would much rather make a protein smoothie at home that not only tastes better but is more nutritious as well.

Usually, extreme diets don't work, or if they do, you will gain the weight back once you stop the diet.  Much better to implement a healthy eating/exercise routine that you can stick with and make a permanent part of your lifestyle.

Try yoga  - it's excellent exercise.

P.S.  Just wanted to add that I, and a friend of mine, too, upon first trying Slim Fast thought there was magic in the shake, and thought we could eat whatever we wanted and take the shake and it would somehow do the work for you.  Heh, well I learned you can't do a meal and a shake and that the secret is that it is about 200 calories per can, and it fills you up with protein, vitamins and minerals, so you don't get hungry.  The main thing though is that it is a lower calorie breakfast and lunch you'll be having by substituting with a shake.
