Twehner5, you are correct - we had problems because we stayed on the first phase.
The diet is GREAT if followed correctly. I did it while breast-feeding and was okay.
The diet gets a bad name because of people who brag about eating all the bacon and eggs, etc. they want to eat. READ the book. Fruits and veggies are allowed. I based my current, 70 pound weight loss on Adkins.
I think any diet that cuts out certain foods or centers on only one food group will put a strain on your all of your body organs.
Best to be safe with a reasonable plan that allows ALL of the basic food groups to help insure that you get adequate vitamins, minerals, etc.
I'm not sure if hurts your kidneys but the diet does put you into keytosis which does affect your kidneys. You are also at high risk of gout - both my husband and I got this with Atkins. If you want to follow a diet plan that can help you change your habits long term you might want to try the South Shore diet. It is more balances but still heavier on the proteins and many have had good success with it.
