Nobody had anything good to say about Slim-Fast. In the early 90's I went on my first diet. I don't like excersize so my diet was to cut down on my food and cut out the fries, other fried food, chocolate, ice cream, etc.

I was between marriages at the time and had a contest instigated by my girl friend - no sex till we lost 7lbs. I was pretty motivated and lost my 7 pretty quickly, however I don't think she ever did. I continued partly by using SF as a dinner replacement maybe 3 times a week. I felt sufficiently satisfied by the drink.

As I remember, I went from 213 to 179 when I stopped the diet. I wrote each day's weight on a calendar (pre-internet tracking:). I intentionally overshot my goal since I knew when stopping the diet, some would probably come back. The weight stayed off for several years. I continued some of the habits like smaller portions which helped. Getting remarried, eating out more, etc, eventually brought me back to being heavy (I am 6'2") and at 236, decided it was time to go on my 2nd diet. My wife has joined me but has not lost much over the last month and a half. I am currently at 224 with a goal of 200. I track daily and my digital scale is very consistent (not sure how accurate, but that is not as important).

One of the things I read above as something to help lose is to drink lots of water. I don't do that much. Is it really helpful? I do drink it at meals, however.

I tried Slim Fast quite some time ago and did not find that it kept me full enough or satisfied enough to continue.

My choice was to journal my food intake and hold myself accountable for the food I was ingesting.  I monitored calories, although there are many plans that work using other measures (points and carbs).  In journaling, I learned proper portion sizes, their nutritional content and studied my emotions.  Those things, plus moderate exercise and positive self-talk, led to my success.

We're here to support you and would be honored to share in your journey.  This is a wonderful place for friendship, motivation and encouragement.

Best wishes to you ... (((Hugs)))

I gained weight on it too as the shakes tasted too good but left me even more hungrier too.  I am finally seeing success by using the *********** web sight and recording everything I eat so I know if I am within my range, using the support of the people here on MedHelp and by increasing my exercise level.  Good luck!

Hi,

I remember trying Slim-Fast for the 1st time when I was a teen and my parents were trying it.

They may have changed over the years, but I know it still comes in desert flavors like chocloate and such.

Disclaimer:  I never had a great relationship with food!  What used to happen to me with S.F. is that I'd get that sweet chocolately flavor in my mouth and well, 1 shake or 1 bar just wasn't enough!  The stuff is loaded with fiber, but I never got full enough off of single servings of it, and the sweet taste made my appetite go WAY UP!

Needless to say, I was not successful in losing weight with their product!

I think some of the ideas from S.F. are good:  It is high in fiber, which can help you feel full.  They encourage you to eat several times a day and not just 1 or 2 big meals, etc.  The shakes/bars are enriched with vitamins/minerals, and I am sure there are even more pluses.

But you could try to do all of those things without the need to buy their products.  I do eat foods high in fiber to help with appetite, but for me it works much better to NOT get my fiber from really sweet foods!

So like Peek says, I gave up on the shakes and bars.

Sometimes if I am traveling or under other conditions where I don't have time to eat/cook well, I will go for some type of nutrition bar, but for me it's not a good everyday solution.

Good Luck!

Hi!  I'm just down the road from you--couple miles!

I did the whole Slim Fast thing a few years ago.  Lost a few pounds, but became so sick of the shakes and candy-like bars that I gave it up.

I have lost all my weight on Weight Watchers.  I love the program, and have found it hands down to work the best for me.

That's the key...find a safe and sane program that you will follow for life.  The whole issue of food and eating does not end when you lose a specific number of pounds.  It requires thought and careful choices for a lifetime.
