Topiramate

ok ok , I started topiramate for 2 moths now, the first month the cravings was less, and after a month the doc, change the dosage, now I'm on 50 twice a day, I don't think its working. I haven't lost any weight, does this meds take time?? Should I been seeing result ? am I wasting my time? I really haven't been experiencing the side effects, little bit at first, but nothing to cry about. If anybody have any advice please any is helpful!

I take it as an anticonvulsant drug.  The neurologist said that his niece lost 15 pounds on it.  I have no idea how long she was on it.

My comments.  I do 2 and 1/2 hours minimum of timed exercises a day, every day, 7 days a week.  Most were given as physical therapy exercises by my HMO.  Exercising tones.  It does not promote weight loss.

I have been exercising at this level for over two years.  Before that time, I was weightlifting every day.

I have been on Phentermine HDL 37.5 for about 3 months.  No side effects whatsoever.  Lost 13 pounds.  5'11" 216 lb. 66 years old.

Having been at a lower weight in my lifetime, I can tell you how it can be done:  no television, no radio, walk everywhere, no refrigerator, no newspaper.  Actually very simple.  When you have to physically carry home what you eat and can't lie around eating, you lose weight.

I think you might want to do a bit more research on this drug.  Like tigerlilly, I know nothing about it, but did a real quick search -- below is just a bit of what I found.

"An anticonvulsant medication, topiramate (Topamax, Ortho-McNeil), has been used for weight loss with significant success in some populations. Populations that have been studied include patients with uncomplicated obesity, patients with weight gain associated with psychotropic drugs, patients with binge eating disorder, and migraine patients.

Unfortunately, a relatively high frequency of adverse events has been reported with topiramate. Adverse events have included parasthesias, memory impairment, taste distortion, fatigue, insomnia, difficulty concentrating, and dizziness."

From a couple of different sites, I found, it doesn't appear that this drug has been approved for use as a weight loss drug.   It seems that there are a lot of studies underway.  Looking at the adverse side effect, personally, I think I'd want to wait until it's approved for that use.

I also found one site that said it doe not work for everyone.  Take care and good luck.

Lilly is right -- you might find more information on the Weight Loss Alternatives forum.
