My period is 12 days long so far, what could be causing this?

I’m 17 years old, almost 18. I don’t have regular periods I’ve always had irregular periods but have always gotten them every month. At the end of last year my period has gotten more irregular I won’t get my period for 1 - 3 months (my period lasts 7 days). Last month I didn’t get my period and maybe wondered if that’s the reason for my prolonged period. I am sexually active and I need to know why this is happening also I have a lot of blood clots this month stringy and clumps almost black looking. This is the second time this has happened and I’m not quite sure how many days last time lasted but I would say 9-11 days. Thank you.

Did you just start having your period in the past few years (maybe 5 or less years)? For the first few years, my period was all over the place, black brown, heavy light, long short. You can go on birth control to regulate your period.  I use NuvaRing, so much easier to track and maintain than a pill. This will also obviously help with your pregnancy risks. You're not pregnant right now, but once you get checked for the items listed above, you will know for sure anyways. Best of Luck!

Well, if you are sexually active, then you do need to take a pregnancy test.  Just to rule it out.  Do you use protection? Bleeding more than 7 days is not good for you. I think you should go for a pelvic exam and discuss this.  Maybe the pill would be a good option for you to help with birth control AND to regulate your period?

No I don’t use protection as there have been many accidents before & I have tested & tested & nothing ever happened i know it sounds bad but I’ve always felt like I could never have kids and still feel that way till this day & my mom has a lot of problems with her Fallopian tubes & everything cysts surgeries so I feel like I will just be infertile & this makes me really dad & also I trust my partner whole heartedly.
You can trust your partner all you want, but sperm is not stopped by trust.  You can get pregnant even when someone "pulls out." We get letters all the time on this site from women who had no sex except with someone who pulled out, and they are pregnant.

See a doctor and get some hormone tests and an ultrasound of your uterus. It would be good to rule out low or fluctuating hormones, PCOS, and fibroids. It could be that all that happened is that you skipped a month and so the next month's period contained endometrium from two months, but why would you have skipped? If your hormones are awry, you could stand to have them regulated, and the easiest way to do that would be to go on the pill. Talk to your doctor and for heaven's sake, stop putting your head in the sand about the risk of pregnancy.
