Tampon Caused UTI?

I came on my period couple days ago during my period I was using Tampons I'd change them frequently throughout the day 5 hours maximum than I'd change. When my period started getting Lighter I switched to Pads but I've noticed that for past few days during my period I'd experience slight pain when I'd urinate. I didn't pay it much attention because it felt like a little irritation. Than Yesterday it became worse i started urinating alot more than usual throughout the day and I felt a burning sensation inside my vaginal hole. I looked up my symptoms and a few things came up one in particular Urinary Tract Infection. So I decided to get the Azo test strips and it came back Positive that I had that. Now I'm take Azo pills to help the pain. Is the test effective? And what could this possibly be because now I'm experiencing itching as well. I do plan on seeing a doctor but in the mean time I'd like some suggestions on what to do?
