There is a lot of controversy over IC and an infection cause. I personally believe that IC can have several causes or series of insults to the bladder that cause or trigger it! I lie with a very difficult chronic infection... though I may have had IC before this, I believe the infection issues definately play a role FOR ME!
Dr. Hultgren has been working on finding biofilms in the bladder wall... he treats or considers IC to be a infectious disease... but he is in the few not the majoirty. However they just broke ground last year on a new women's center at St. Louis, MO! I am very hopeful that the work and research that they plan to do there will shed light hope and answers for us!
It sounds like to me you need some other coping tools to help you deal with your IC!
AZO is an over the counter medicine that helps. Eating foods that are OK in the IC diet helps as well! The IC Network has lots and lots of research on IC that you would find very interesting!
I have several coping tools that help me daily! I take aloe from dessert Harvest, I do bladder instills with pain relieving medications as well as use vaginal supppositories at night that help my pain! If your doctor can not offer you any other treatment options look around for on that will!

Hi
There seems to be inconclusive evidence that certain viruses directly cause interstitial cystitis. However, there are studies which appear to show associations of certain viruses and interstitial cystitis. Examples of which would be HPV type 66 and polyomaviruses. Biopsies have shown that these viruses have been present in patients with IC.
