Preventer

Preventer

I was diagnosed with mild/moderate asthma when I was 10 and was prescribed the brown pulmicort turbohaler (one dose daily) and the blue bricanyl inhaler (as and when required).  I used both inhalers regularly in my teens but stopped the pulmicort in my late teens/early twenties.  I also only used the bricanyl occasionally, say before/after excercise, colds/flu or hay fever season at this time.  Recently, the asthma nurse said I didn't the pulmicort preventer, I'm 24 now and only use the bricanyl say about twice a month.  The thing is, after having the pulmicort prescribed for so long, it was almost a reasurrance having it as I do worry about my breathing or whether my asthma my flare up again, sometimes this cause me mild anxiety.  Do i really need the preventer (Pulmicort) or is it of any benefit or I am just worrying unneccessarily.

Many Thanks

As I understand, there are risks assoc with any inhaled steroid so if you are able to do well without it and can maybe ask your doctor about using a peak flow meter at home, then you can catch a flare in its very early stages and take the inhaled steroids sooner vs. later when it goes into a full attack.  I'm not a doctor, 2 of  my children have been on Advair for many years and now, like you are off all meds unless needed ... they are like you and need their inhaler 2X a month and/or before excercise.  But my 16 yr old did go on Advair for track & swim season.
