Confused..

I am a 20 year old female, I am ashamed to say that I have use meth on and off for the last 3 or so years,I have horrible mood swings. I can't sleep most of the time. I loose my temper constantly in a violent way.

My mother works in a hospital and asked doctors about what the cause of this could be. They said I might be bipoloar, but this was assumed without speaking to me and without the knowledge of my meth use. I am very confused myself and am too afraid to see a doctor for the fact that using meth is a crime and they probably can get me in trouble.

I really would like to know if my violent mood swings and suicidal thoughts are from meth, or am I actually bipolar? I know for a fact I have anxiety attacks and feel depressed all the time but then that can be a whole different way to cure anxiety and depression. Different medication is used for all these illnesses, and I don't want to make the wrong move. I did Google alot of this but for some reason I feel as though they all seem to have the same symptoms. I really need some help. It would be great if i could finally find out whats going on in my imbalanced body and mind.

I do understand that using meth is wrong and I have reaserched the affects of meth use. It causes an imbalance in your brain chemistry. So which one is it?

It is common for people with bipolar disorder to self medicate with street drugs.

If you go to a drug and alcohol rehabilitation centre they will not charge you they will help you. I have not heard of anyone getting charged because they told their doctors about illegal drug use. Unless of course you are stupid and bring drugs into the center or try to deal while there. Their whole focus is to help you. Meth is a drug you'll need some outside help to get off of. Maybe getting into a methodone program or something like that.

All of the symptoms you describe sound like drug usage to me. Part of what would be important to consider is what you were like before you used. If you had the symptoms you described before drug use then it is more likely you are bipolar.

Try and get help with your meth addiction and then you'll be able to get help with your mental illness if one exists. And don't take bipolar drugs without telling your psychiatrist about the meth problem. They won't report you, they will get you help. Bipolar drugs and meth wouldn't mix very well. If you need incentive think of how you will feel if you seriously hurt someone you love during a high, or just seriously hurt someone. What would you do if you ended up wounding your mom. On meth - it will happen. Its just a matter of time.

Did you have these problems before you started using Meth?  Have you used other drugs, or attempted suicide?  You could be depressed and self-medicating with street drugs.  This is not good, you must get clean, and stay clean.  DO you have a family history of bipolar?  It is often inherited although not always, but it would put you at greater risk for the disease?  Do not be ashamed to tell the doctors you have to own up to your mistakes, so that you can move past them.  It's not doctors' jobs to lock you up or call the police, unless you were at the doctor's office trying to hurt him or yourself.  It is their job to help you medically.  A drug addiction becomes a medical issue.  Seek inpatient treatment if you can't do it alone.

There's nothing much I can add to monkeyc's comments as he covers all the bases.

In a nutshell, your priority is to get help getting off the meth, only then can you be properly diagnosed and treated for any mental health problems (whether they be from use of meth or otherwise).

There is a forum on here for substance users where you will get help and support, it is worth checking that out.

I wish you lots of luck.

OK - Yes Meth causes psychoses and mania in bipolars and its very very very dangerous.  If you are bipolar then the mania and suicidal thoughts would be caused by meth yes however one of the side effects of Meth and Ice use is also violent mood swings, unpredictable behavior and suicidal thoughts - Meth is not a safe drug and its made by people who have no interest in purity or safety either.

However I see nothing in your comment here which indicates you are willing to give up Meth?  If youre not then treatment is going to be very hard to get and rather pointless as not many pdocs are going to be willing to take on a meth user as a bipolar patient.

If you want to get a proper diagnosis you are going to need to be honest with your doctors and make a serious decision to get off meth first.

Meth is not just wrong, its an illegal, dangerous and addictive drug which causes untold damage to users and people around the users and is a major cause of violence, petty crime, assault and even murders, it does a lot more than cause an imbalance in brain chemistry it turns people who use it heavily into psychotic's prone to violent outbursts without warning - watch some video of police officers and hospital staff dealing with meth and ice users in violent states and you will get what I mean and what amazes me is this is ALL self inflicted.

I truly do not know what to say beyond that - I admit upfront to not being remotely a fan of meth and ice users as they display traits that real mentally ill people display which helps to further stigmatise those of us with diagnosed mental illnesses - its very hard to see something on TV talking about mania and meth usage and then dealing with looks from people who know you are BP and now wonder if youre going to turn violent or crazy like that.

Get off meth and then you can get a diagnosis, until then from where I sit youre just looking for an excuse for behaviour caused by the drug.

No offense intended or judgement on you, im sorry I just really have a problem with meth.
