being put under when you have Chiari

I have to go for a colonoscopy next week and I am a little nervous about being put under.  Is there any reason for concern? Obviously, many have Chiari surgery and get put under...so I would just appreciate your input!!

Thanks!  HL

Just to let you know, I am home with a full belly, and the meds they used to put me out were very weak with no residual affects, thanks goodness! I asked the doctor to give me a weaker dose, and I woke up alert and happy :)  She said that Chiari shouldn't have an affect on the medication's affects.

That reminds me I'm due for one also.

I think the most important thing is that they know what meds you're on.  I was a big baby about, but it wasn't bad.  Whatever they gave me to drink the day before made me freezing cold!  When I told them--I thought I was sick-- they said, "oh yeah, that's a side effect of the medicine".   Well, you'd think that Information might be important!

I haven't had to have this test yet, but my DH just had it done and he was home making breakfast as soon as he was finished.  He told me the preperation for it all is the worse because of the stuff you have to drink and going to the rest roo all night.  Everything else went fine.  Hope the best for you.

Did you chose to be put to sleep? I had a colonoscopy while awake. It isn't that bad to be honest. Over so fast and only uncomfortable part is the air puffing up inside and the liquid u drink day before Haha not nice

I have a colonoscopy every 3 years due to 1st degree relative's history of colon  cancer.

I was only diagnosed 2 years ago, so this last one was the first time I could inform the doc about the Chiari.  Just let them know about it as you may need less or more "gas" to put you completely under.  Also, do you have a connective tissue disorder?  You definitely want to let the doc know if you do.

Good luck and I hope everything turns out okay!

I would just let them know about your chiari and have them be extra carefull with your neck. If you could wear a neck collar that may he'll? I know my mom had one the other day and when she came back to room she was on her side. I'm not sure how much or if at all they move you around tho. I had one in 2009, before my dxs. You will be fine. Just make sure you let dr know mainly your medications :) good luck
