I am not a doctor, but I would check into allergies such as pollen or mold in the home. Have your house tested. Our son only coughs when he is sleeping and I am in the same predicament.
One dr said every 5 min cough was "normal, will go away in a few weeks" i was SO mad!
He had the same records as the allergist who told me "no, not normal and here is medication to make it go away" and it did!
it can be allergies making the cold/flu congestion not go away. the continued drainage causes the coughing. nasal rinsing with a neti pot or bottle helps a lot, and so does medication - from benedryl/sudafed/dimetapp to better prescription drugs to stop the congestion - nasonex, singulair, and inhalers to relax the lungs like advair, pulmacort, albuterol.
