GOP offers own proposal to avert 'fiscal cliff'

http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_news/2012/12/03/15649000-gop-offers-own-proposal-to-avert-fiscal-cliff?lite

A snippet from the article:

"As Republicans put it, they would raise $800 billion in new revenue through tax reform, $600 billion in health savings, $200 billion from changes to the Consumer Price Index, $300 billion in discretionary spending cuts, and another $300 billion in savings in mandatory spending. Many of the health savings track closely with the changes to Medicare first proposed in Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan’s budgets.

Republicans say the plan, using the Obama administration’s math, would achieve $4.6 trillion in savings.

It’s unclear, though, whether the Republican plan would move toward ending the stalemate around the fiscal cliff negotiations, with less than a month remaining until the automatic tax hikes and spending cuts are scheduled to snap into place on Jan. 1."

The GOP says their offer is the ‘Bowles’ proposal. Bowles himself disagrees

No, they never said it was THE same proposal.  It was used as an example.

I heard Bowle's on the news today, he said it DID reflect the same ideas, but times have changed (in a year)...so he's basically saying his own plan is no good anymore.

Thanks. Doesnt sound easy.

(NEWSER) – Nancy Pelosi will file a motion today to force a vote on Bush-era tax cuts, her office says. The House minority leader's "discharge petition" would aim for a vote this month on extending the cuts for those earning less than $250,000, while ending them for those earning more, the Washington Post reports. The measure passed the Senate this summer. Such petitions, which rarely work, are a minority party attempt to get a vote on a bill the House Speaker won't bring up. To prompt a vote, Pelosi would need 218 signatures.

I heard the dems are trying to discharge a vote? Force a vote on the tax cuts for those making 250.000 and less. Anyone know how that happens?

The biggest problem I have with going over the cliff, other than it's not necessary, is the sequestration.  That could have HUGE impacts.

Mike, I sure hope you're right...I honestly don't think it's going to happen.  I think this is more strategic in nature than any of us could imagine.

We are going off the cliff. PERIOD. I'm fine with that! It's an unfortunate reality that BOTH parties can't be BIG about the situation. ..Neither side is going to budge. Once we've "gone over" then the REAL negotiating will begin because the longer we stay "off the cliff", the more it WILL hurt both parties IF they don't get a BIG DEAL done...

They'll reach an agreement. Of that I have no doubt whatsoever.

I think a mediator is a good idea, but like NG said, then they'd be arguing over who is qualified to be considered for the position.

Personally, I think this is something that will eventually have to be decided between the 2 factions.  I think it is possible, but everyone is still holding everything too close to the chest yet.  Nobody is willing to drop their guard in order to consider something that might go against party lines.

True enough,lol.

This is really a stretch for me. I know nothing about these sort of politics, I feel like I am learning the alphabet. I have little pieces but I cannot see the larger picture on how the Government (this Govt) runs and negotiates to keep running.
Out of my league, here. If you all can put up with an occasional dense question, I hope to learn something.

Great idea, rivil...only they would get hung up agreeing on that 3rd party person.  lol

I hope this doesn't seem to be too silly of a question...
If it is "the result of disparate realities.", which strikes me as true, then perhaps a solution would be to bring in a third party to sort of mediate?
I laugh out loud at the idea myself, but it seems that there is so little trust and that they are so into the game playing that maybe they should have a panel of bipartisan experts who could advise them on how to proceed and make things work..
A lot of objections rise in my mind thinking about his idea, but the country is split, the Gov. is split, there has got to be some sort of bridge building, maybe outside of our elected leaders. What a mess.

"Almost rational" is only appropriate if both sides are capable of reason/rational thinking which is only possible if the parties have a shared or very similar reality. I think we are seeing the result of disparate realities.

I'm familiar with that tactic, mike.  What I cannot get, for the life of me is, why won't these people be a little more realistic?  Throw something out there that is almost rational?

I don't think they have it in them....

It's likely just a negotiating tactic. It's one I never use but a lot of people do. The sellers start way too high and the buyers way too low.

I mentioned this the other day.  The Presidents proposal complete with its "$hits and giggles" was dropped by the Republicans and I also said that the Republicans would probably as well throw something out there, equally as unreasonable.  TA DA!  No offense to the nations 3rd graders, but....

About the President sticking to his plan.... in this offer, he clearly asked for more money.  How is that sticking to anything?
