Another Crown Question

by Katefreeman, Apr 20, 2006 12:00AM
Thank you for the sound advice on my first question.

I have been doing some research and would like clarification on the following for a porcelain crown on a front tooth:

1. During the final bonding, should heavy pressure be applied to the tooth to make it fit better before it is cured?

2. If the crown is not exactly aligned with the other teeth should more tooth be removed from the stump to make it fit or should the crown be remade?

3. If additonal porcelain is added to the crown at the lab, is the crown as strong as it would be if it were made in one sitting?

According to what I have read, the even bond is what determines the strength of a porcelain crown, not the crown itself. Therefore, the crown should fit like a glove perfectly before it is bonded. Is this correct?

I agree with what you said about the fit of an all porcelain crown. You really can't use pressure to seat these crowns. If the crown doesn't fit then I believe a new impression should be taken but that is up to the descretion of the dentist. Sometimes a SLIGHT adjustment can be made to the prep but nothing of great consequence. If after a certain amount of work is done to make it fit and it doesn't work then you have to bite the bullet and do it again.Sorry for the pun.
