Bridge vs. implant

Bridge vs. implant

I have to have an upper back tooth extracted since it is cracked thru the root.  I have a choice of an implant (with a possible sinus lift and bone graft) or a bridge.  what is the best option to choose-- and what is the logevity of the bridge.  I am 50 and would like to be done with this, but am a bit nervous about the invasive nature of the sinus/ bone graft stuff. All my teeth are quite healthy, but this was just a freak accident while eating a hard candy, I am not against surgery, had breast cancer already--10 years --  early menopause-- and now possible osteopoenia---just don't know if the implants are worth it .  How hard are the bridges to care for when they are in the back??

This is a very good question. The last question first is that it is quite easy to maintain the fixed bridge and it should last many years. In all likely hood it will have to be redone at sometime in the future. These bridges can last 15 to 20 years. I have some that have lasted longer. Now the question of the implant. Years ago I would have recommended a fixed bridge without hesitation. In this day and age and the advances in implant dentistry I have no qualms in having an implant inserted if the patient has two good teeth that need not be preped for a bridge. I would make sure that your medical history is taken into account. I do not feel it would have any affect on the decision in the placement of the implant.
