Tooth Sensitivity/Root Canal

Tooth Sensitivity/Root Canal

I have always had sensitive teeth but was mostly controlled with Sensodyne. I also have been told by dentists over the past 4 years that I clench my teeth. I began to have pain in a bottom molar in June. My dentist put in a white filling in July. It was fine until late September when it began to hurt under the tooth. I was taking Advil every 4 hours and the pain had spread to my jaw muscle. I went to the dentist who said I probably had TMJ. I got a mouth guard but the pain in the tooth only got worse. I was sent to a TMJ specialist who said that I had mild TMJ symptoms but needed a root canal. I had one done immediately. It was very painful and the endontist confirmed that I had a dead nerve.  I was not prescribed antibiotics. After a few days, the pain had still not subsided. I went back and they tested the tooth for sensitity to cold. The root canaled tooth had no response but the one next to it felt pain when exposed to cold. Also a tooth on top layer above the sore teeth had a mild reaction to the cold test.  The pain in the tooth next to the root canal kept hurting and 2 weeks later I had a second root canal.  It has been two weeks since the second root canal. The two root canaled teeth don't have crowns yet and are still a bit sore. But now the top layer of teeth (not a specific tooth) reacts to even slightly cool drinks and outside temperature (it's winter). It's pretty much a dull ache all day. My endontist said to wait for the crowns until I was in no pain- I'm not there yet but can't tell if that could be making the top teeth hurt. I am still wearing the mouthguard and using that seems to be helping. I am also using Pro-Enamel.  Any ideas?? Thanks

It sounds like you've been quite a few dentists lately.

I understand what their perspective on the matter is.  I think that it may be necessary to perform a root canal on the top tooth as well if there is indeed symptoms that exist after placement of the new crown.  If the mouthguard is helping, then its possible that the nerve of the tooth is functioning fine but that with the trauma from clenching, it has damaged the tooth and caused an irritation and sensitivity that hasn't gone away.  In addition, if the sensodyne is helping, my assumption is that you also have some gum recession?  I would definitely wait if possible before having any more root canals done.
