What to do?

What to do?

Before today I hadn't been to the dentist in 2 years. The last time I was at the dentist was to get my wisdom teeth out which were impacted. I had all 4 taken out and was sedated for the procedure. I had almost no pain afterwards and wanted to eat later that night.

After that I stopped going to the dentist... I was sick of having my teeth drilled on and me being in pain. Ever since the 3rd grade (I'm now 20) I have never recieved anything while having my cavities filled. This was a choice I made because of the after effects from them shots that I experienced.

Because of the many cavities I had filled without any numbing shot I am now terrified of the drill... very, very terrified! Which is why I refused to go to the dentist.

Today I went to the dentist for the first time in over 2 years. I went to  a new dentist where they advertised that they do sedation and laser dentristy.

I was told that I have four cavities on my upper teeth (inbetween them) and one on the bottom between teeth, the one on the bottom they said will require a crown.

I asked if they would be using the laser, they said that they have a waterlase, however since all of my cavities happened in spots I had filled previously they cannot use it. They said they need to use a drill.

I can not sit through the drill again... even if I didn't feel or hear it I just can't!

As far as sedation they said they have another clinic that can do that... but they made it seem like I should be able to do it without being sedated.

Is it wrong for me to insist on the sedation... in all honesty none of these cavities are painful to me currently and if I'm not going to be sedated I more than likely will never make an appt to get them filled.

Is it wrong for me to insist on sedation?

I'm sorry that you have such a difficult time going to a dentist for treatment.

No, it is not wrong for you to seek sedation for dental treatment.  There are individuals out there such as yourself who have such anxiety about dental treatment that sedation is a great way to get your dental work done.

I don't personally do any sedation besides mild conscious sedation but with a deep sedation, you probably won't remember a thing.  You may need to go back to get the crown placed (as it requires two visits, once for the preparation and impression, the second time to delivery/cement it in the mouth).  But with the cementation, there shouldn't be much or any drilling.
