infected teeth after filings

both of my kids had fillings and those same teeth were subsequently infected to the extent that they had to be extracted. is this common? I feel like the dentist may not have followed best practices.

That's hard to say.  It can be due to anything such as a bad filling.  But it could also be due to poor hygiene practices, high consumption of sugar, etc.  If you're not sure, you may want to consult with a pediatric dentist and get your care there as they're specialize for children.
