this really hurts

this really hurts

I am 31 yrs old, one of my teeth had a filling on it that had fallen out and started to chip so it was decided that I had to have this tooth pulled out 5 days ago, it was upper right side two away from wisdom tooth.  The  root of the tooth was very large, almost twice the size of the tooth.  The dentist didn't xray or anything simply started to pulled the sucker out.
There is exposed bone on the front of the gum even though it clotted.  i have been having shooting pain going up the right side of my face since getting this tooth pulled.  The sensation is like having every nerve ending on fire and tingling at the same time. And the right side of my face is swollen.
I went back to the dentist who said, it was dry socket. I dont see how? please explain.  I am not on antibiotics. Just taking ibuprofen every 6 hrs with little to no relief.  He gave me some dry socket paste to used that i am finding difficult to use due to smell and taste.

Well, it depends on whether there really is exposed bone.  If there is, the area needs to be cleaned out and the bone needs to be removed if its loose bone or tooth parts versus the actual jaw bone which should be covered by the blood clot and heal up rather quickly.  If its a loose piece of bone, it'll take a few weeks or longer for the bone to make its way out.
