white bumps on back of tongue

white bumps on back of tongue

I was given a heart medication called Amiodarone 200 mg which gave me dry mouth, bad breath, canker sores, a white tongue and an extreme condition of acne rodesca.  I was on it for approximately 6 days, taking 400mg for the first 3 days and the doctor took me off it due to all the problems I was having with it.  I still have the white tongue and now have white spots on the back of my tongue which are uncomfortable as I can feel them...my tongue feels alittle swollen and uncomfortable.  This medication seems to stay in the system for a long period of time after it is discontinued.  Do you think these white spots are from the medication?  I have been brushing my tongue alot and used a chlohexidine gluconate oral rinse that I had but nothing is working...any ideas?

Its possible that the white spots are a side effect of the medication although I can't find any documentation of any such cases.  There are cases of skin pigmentation cases, dry mouth and changes in taste and smell.  The amiodarone can stay in your system for months.  Since the medication has been stopped, I would keep an eye for any new changes in your mouth.  Any problems that arise or worsen would warrant an evaluation by a dentist or an oral medicine doctor although there may not be much they can do since the medication is stopped.
