Itcy breasts

by FRAN, Jun 21, 2000 12:00AM
Doctor,

For many years now, my breasts often itch around the nipple area, especially in the winter.  I have tried different creams and baby oils that seem to lessen the itch, but not heal it.  I have the problem examined and both doctors were unconcerned about the problem.  What can I do to alleviate this problem and SHOULD I be concerned?  Thank you.

Fran:

Eczema often affects the nipples in the way you describe.  While you don't need to be disturbed (it's just a superficial problem, not part of the breast), you can treat it using OTC (1%) hydrocortisone.  Twice-daily applications for a couple of days should bring relief.  If and when it recurs, just use it again.

Best.
