Shape of the tonsils, abnormal?

by Peter V H., Dec 12, 1999 12:00AM

Hi,

I just wondered are tonsils perfectly round or are they shaped like cauliflowers with bumps on, I recently noticed that I have a white / fleshy coloured bump on my tonsil, but not the on the other tonsil, is there anything to be worried about?  Should I have these checked out?  What do tonsils usually look like? any pictures, information or advise you could give me would be much apprechiated, thank you.

Peter:

A bump on the tonsil is usually an engorged piece of lymphatic tissue (which is what tonsils themselves are.)  Sometimes there's infection, but if you're not sick, this is less likely.

You might want to wait a couple of weeks to see if the bump subsides.  If it doesn't, why not have a doctor check it out, for reassurance?

Best.
