A friend with Bulimia/Anorexia

I have this friend and she is 18 years old. She is 5' 7" and only weighs 130lbs. She has been fighting a eating disorder for a long time now and I don't know how to support her to get better. She is seeing doctors already and her family knows. I was wondering if anybody has any ideas on how I should react. I already tell her that she is not fat (trust me she is not) but I don't know what else to do. Help.

Well, your friend is at a normal weight for her height, but eating disorders aren't really about weight. Eating disorders come in all shapes and sizes. Really, all you can do as her friend is let her know you are there to support her in her recovery and that you are there for her. Try not to focus too much on her eating disorder, as you don't want her to think that's what you see when you think of her. In recovery, she will need to move away from the eating disorder being her identity, so that's why I suggest that. If she needs to talk then of course it's okay, but I wouldn't make that the only thing you all talk about. Try to do fun things together..things that will take the focus off of her e.d. Or maybe talk about just normal everyday things with her..school, boys, whatever it is your interests are. =) Does that help at all?
