4 yr old with optic neuritis

My grandson was diagnosed in November 1998 with optic neuritis.He was 3 yrs old. He had been born premature and I don't know if this had anything to do with it, weighing just 1lb 13 ozs at birth. He was admitted to the hospital and given IV steroid treatment for 4 days. Three days later he lost his sight again. This time he was given oral steroids and he continued to get better. His vision is still very bad and the doctors say now that he is considered legally blind.  In reading up on this condition I am seeing alot of articles that this can be MS or lead to MS, I'm not sure but most cases don't envolve such a young child. can you give me any info on what the long term affects may be?
