Duane Syndrome

There are a few questions posted Re: Duane Syndrome but I have a few other questions about this syndrome.
A friend of mine (who is adopted) recently had a baby of her own.  My friend was born with Duane Syndrome and has been unable to get any information on whether this syndrome is 1) hereditary, 2) other abnormalities that may be associated with it, 3) at what age it typically becomes apparent that a child has this syndrome. She is trying to get a medical history together for her child's sake, but being adopted herself with no medical background is making this a difficult task.  Any information you can send answering the above questions is greatly appreciated.

duanes synrdrome is a congenital ( present from birth ) disorder that has three variants, the most common one causing a patient limited ability to move one eye all the way out ( the condition is unilateral ) it typically allows excellent vision, though sometimes it requires surgery as the child gets older- it is believed to be caused by the failure of the nerve to the lateral rectus muscle of the eye to form properly- it is almost always NOT inherited , though 1 in 10 may be inherited- it can be associated with hearing defecits and spinal abnormalities-   i hope this helped   make sure that the child is seen by a pediatric ophthalmologist
