Lattice Degeneration & Laser Treatment Of ?

Posted By Bob on July 09, 1999 at 09:18:00
Hello:
I have recently had retinal tears in one eye that were treated with a laser.
There was no retinal detachment.
My ophthalmogist has just told me that my other eye has a lattice degeneration, is thin,
and suggested that I should consider, strongly, having laser repair to this area also.
The retinal tears I had seemed to have been well corrected by the laser work done in that eye.
I was told that retinal tears/detachments in one eye very often occur in the other eye as well, and with the weakened lattice structure in the other eye, it would be a good preventive measure.
I am very uncertain as to whether to have this treatment, as I am usually of the opinion thatif something isn't broken, don't fix it.
However, I can appreciate that it may help prevent problems in this eye from occurring in the future.
I would be grateful for any opinions.
Also:
-what, if any, are the downsides to the lattice "repair" via a laser.
-opinions on risk/benefit ratio?
-exactly what (and where) is done by the laser ; what is the lattice?
Thank you very much,
Bob
