My son Mrinal Govind had a severe left eye injury on 1.4.1999.A solid rubber ball directly hit the left eye, causing severe pain in the left eye for a day and severe internal damage. The vision was with full of scratches, two big black spots and several tiny black spots. Apart from this, on the right upper corner of the eye, a black patch developed.
Specialist attending to advised the patient for complete bed rest for 7 days with some medicines for 12 days. Vision improved during this period and most of the scratches and tiny black spots vanished except for the two black spots that also got smaller. The vision was 6/9 without glass. But upper right side black patch persisted.
On 13.5.'99 the patient underwent vitrectomy, belt buckle, trans scleral crypexy, fluid gas exchange and SF6 in his left eye.
The final examination and glass appointment was conducted on 30.6.'99. The doctor opined that the patient is continuing to do extremely well and has asked to report after 6 months.
The black spots have removed. However, the vision in the left eye has been found 6/60 (with glass sph. -3.00, v/a - 6/6). The objects look elongated and pale with or without glass. Right side upper corner black patch is still persisting and the horizontal lines touching the patch are getting curved over it.
Question: I would like to know the following:
1. Was the operation absolutely necessary?
2.If yes, what purpose it has served to the patient, considering that the vision has deteriorated from 6/9 to 6/60, black patch is still persisting with horizontal lines approaching the patch getting curved over it, objects look elongated and pale with naked eye as well as with the prescribed glass?
3.Any further treatment suggested for further improvement.

unfortunately without examining your child i cannot answer these questions. i would point out that the "corrected" vision went from 6/9 to 6/6, which is 20/20 vision. the scleral buckle that was performed tends to cause nearsighted ness.
