My 3 yr old is suffering from constipation frequently. After trying everything else, we gave him a pediatric enema. It worked and he passed a few hard pieces and then the movements turned to diarrhea and now it's diarrhea with what looks like bright red blood. Not just a little bit, but totally mixed in with the watery stool. What could this be? Should we seek medical attention?
Well, without a detailed clinical evaluation it would be difficult to determine the cause of his symptoms. Possible causes that may need to be considered include GI infections, inflammations, trauma, growths/ masses, vascular or haematological causes etc. With the presence of blood in stools, immediate medical attention should be sought. A visit to the ER or a gastroenterologist may be suggested, depending on the severity of the condition.
Hope this is helpful.
