Bilirubin toxicity

by Nick476, Jul 21, 2008 08:19AM
My father became jaundiced and went to the doctor.  His bilirubin, which was normally 0.6-0.7, was 8.1.  They have sent him home and scheduled him for an EUS and an ERCP, but not for 16 days.  I am concerned that this is too long to wait.  What do you think?
I've researched this just enough to be confused but it seems that if he has a total bilary obstruction, his bilirubin levels will rise about .75-1.0 per day.  This will put him at over 20 by the time he is scheduled for his ERCP.  At what levels does a high bilirubin start to affect other organs?   At what levels can it become lethal?  He really isn't feeling well and I am concerned that they should have put him in the hospital immediately.  Comments?
Thanks,
Nick
