Prednisone

by Dfrey29, Mar 23, 2009 10:04PM
My doctor prescribed 40mg x 9 days prednisone with no need to taper for a flare. I asked for something because I have a trip planned and need to get under control.  I am concerned about not tapering.  I thought you always have to taper prednisone.  Anyone have an answer if this is safe?

If you were taking prednisone for long periods of time - depending upon your condition (like U.C or Crohn's) - then, yes, you would need to taper to have time for your HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) axis to come back 'on line,' but since you're only using it for 9 days your doc is assuming there shouldn't be a problem.
