Four years ago I suffered torrential and life-threatening rectal/diverticular bleeding which eventually required a total colectomy. However I am now 62 and I feel it is unlikely that at your age you will have such a drastic underlying cause.
Rectal bleeding is never normal. Causes can be "minor" (most likely in younger patients such as yourself) but there are more sinister causes especially in the over 40's. For the maximum possible reassurance, I suggest that you insist on a colonoscopy which will hopefully eliminate these more serious causes.

Good luck
