Rectal Bleeding

by Bianca208, Feb 28, 2008 11:09AM
I'm a 23 yr old women. I've been suffering from rectal bleeding for almost 2 wks. It happens when I go poop, if I fart or even when I go pee. I'm beginning to worry. I'm not suffering from hemmriods. I also know it can't be caused by passing a hard/big stool because it happens when I just go pee. The blood is red or burgandy (dark red). I've also been suffering from diariah on and off. I've lost 10lbs in the last month (I'm not sure if it's related). I'm going to the doctor's tmrw, but I wanted to get a heads up...

Rectal bleeding is never normal.  Causes can be "minor" (most likely in younger patients such as yourself) but there are more sinister causes especially in the over 40's.  For the maximum possible reassurance, I suggest that you insist on a colonoscopy which will hopefully eliminate these more serious causes.

Four years ago I suffered torrential and life-threatening rectal/diverticular bleeding which eventually required a total colectomy.  However I am now 62 and I feel it is unlikely that at your age you will have such a drastic underlying cause.

Good luck
