My Mother is 86 and had a MRSA infection after surgery about six weeks ago. After intensive IV antibiotic tx she is home and doing well, except that in the last few days she developed really extreme stomach gas
and belching and feeling sick to her stomach after she eats. Although I urged her to contact her doctor, she does not want to call him. Is it likely her problem is a result of loss of helpful bacteria due to the antibiotics, and is live culture yogurt the best thing to push her to take? She did eat some yogurt the last few days but her condition seems to be worsening. She does not feel gas
or acid neutralizing remedies, all older people lose the ability to produce stomach acid, therefore losing the ability to digest the food properly, the gas
will help, she actually needs the acid levels increasing so she can start to digest foods properly again, there is a very good drug called "domperidone" which helps stomach emptying, but should not be taken for a long period of time, this will just help jump start her digestive transit again, alternatively there are other things like betaine Hydrochloride derived from beets, you mothers condition is called hypochlorhydria, if this is not sorted she will start getting weaker because of nutrient deficiencies and the inability to absorb proteins and calcium.
I hope she makes a full recovery.
The antibiotics and illness will definately have made her digestive problems a lot worse, another reason you need to get those acid levels improved, is to protect here from further bacterial and viral infections.
I hope she makes a full recovery.
