Temporary difficulty swallowing & pain in neck from ear to Adam's Apple

For the last month, about once a week I wake up from pain due to difficulty swallowing.  The pain starts at my Adam's Apple and reaches to my ear.  It is almost impossible to swallow.  If I force it, swallowing is extremely painful. Usually I can make it stop by twising my neck or opening my mouth.  I'll hear a slight popping sound and then almost immediately the symptoms go away.  Tonight, however, the problem occured while I was awake and lying down.  This time the pain and difficulty swallowing lasted about ten minutes before I felt the popping and the problem stopped.  Any ideas?
