by lucianvivant5150, Aug 10, 2009 12:14AM
Hello. I have been having a problem for 2 months now. I went into ER 2 months ago with constipation and was given Colyte and Lactulose.  Ever since then NO MATTER WHAT I EAT. 4-6 hrs later i feel like i have to have a bm and get sick vomit and have extreme pain.  I then take large ammts of lactulose and eventually pass the stool but am sick as a dog and bloated. I was told by my insurance that it was all in my head and to go to psych(i am a psych patient with anciety probs and borderline personality disorder)  After 23 vistis to the ER i got a ct and was found to have divirticulitus. Now on antibiotics i still have the problem and cannot hold the antibiotics in. i am blocked by my psych of ANY help in the psychical medicine part of my insurance. i jsut got back from ER and they will not even give me my antibiotics in an IV. it says in my chart DO NOT TREAT PSYCH PAITENT.  they have ran blood and stool samples but i dont know what all for. i am not on drugs but i did relaps on alcohol due to the pain at night. my psych says i gave myelf this problem for attention, and when i disagreed she called me a sociopath.  I cannot change insurance or get diffrent doctors as i am blocked. Can someone  please help me. i was 232 lbs 2 motnhs ago and i weighed in at 186 lbs today(i am 6'3"). but its all in my head right... SIGH please help me.
Currently i eat only once ever 3 days and very late at night then take 45mls of lactulose and usually have a bm in the bed and am up all night. this is no way to live.

I don't know why they didn't give you the antibiotics via I.V., because that's what is recommended when the pills won't stay down.  The diverticulitis showed up on the scan becuz an infection caused by that disease will show up as pus and ruptured pockets in the bowel.  Sometime this week, you should try to get a copy of the scan report and the ER report that diagnosed you with diverticulitis.  You can then go to the county health department, do not give them your insurance card, white lie if you have to, so you can see one of their docs for low or no cost, and give the physician you see your records, so you'll at least be under a physician's treatment while all this disease seige is going on.

Now, as for your eating problems and the pills not going down, I have a few ideas, you can try them if you want to.  People who have an attack of diverticulitis should only consume liquids and a soft food diet.  So, get you some soup you particularly like, most people love chicken noodle soup, for example, and some crackers, and buy any old kinda cereal you like, rice krispies go down good, and drink a very small glass of orange juice with it, and pour on acidophilus milk.  Some instant mashed potatoes, applesauce, pudding, all that stuff will go down real easy.  Just find SOMEthing soft and yummy to really get into and eat it.  If your antibiotics are in pill form, crush it up or dissolve it or hide capsule forms in one of the foods that does make it down without making you sick.  You need to get those pills down to stop the infection your diverticulitis flare-up has created.

If your guts are painful, obviously don't drink alcohol.  Rather do some easy stretching of all your muscles, then take an alka seltzer and relax your body completely, by laying out flat with legs bent and your arms open, and breathing really deeply.  Try to minimize noise and light when you relax like this.  Lay still for about fifteen minutes, as long as you can.  The alka seltzer will settle your tummy, release any painful gas, and reduce the inflammation that's in your bowel right now, and relaxing will help get rid of the bad tension in your body.  I hope some of what I say helps you.  I know what it's like to be physically sick and no one will help.

By the way, one thing you could do that will probably resolve all this, is when you get your records from the ER, make copies, send one set to your psychiatrist and one set to your insurance company, requesting they allow you to receive ongoing treatment for diverticulitis.  You might be nuts, but if a scan and docs at the ER said you have diverticulitis, and it goes untreated becuz these people are uninformed, they're looking at a lawsuit if you wind up almost dying from infection, any lawyer would jump all over that.  And I might add, one of the reasons you may have some of these mental problems might be becuz your bowel isn't absorbing nutrients very well!  So, all the more reason that your insurance should let you thru, or they'll wind up paying FOREVER for psych stuff, when it could be as a result of a simple malabsorbtion and malnutrition problem!  Imagine that!
