cramping after subtotal colectomy

cramping after subtotal colectomy

I am 24 and had surgery for slow transit of the colon. They did a subtotal colectomy where they removed all of the large intestine except for the last 6 inches and then joined the small intestine to these last 6 inches (anastomosis?). I had the surgery 3 months ago and feel better than I ever have, but I only have a BM every 3 days. Is this normal? Also, I get a lot of cramping right after I eat. It is very painful and I have it almost every day.  Any idea what is causing these pains? Is it normal to have these after this kind of surgery? Is there anything I can do to help the cramping to stop and is there anything I can do to make my BMs a little more frequent?

After your type of surgery it is normally just the opposite with the bowel movements.  Everyone I've known to have this surgery had suffered with many watery BM's every day.  If it weren't for the cramping, I'd say you're very lucky but obviously something is causing the cramping. I would contact your GI to get checked out to insure everything is working correctly, and that there isn't any scar tissue causing some blockage.  Then he can advise you as to whether you need a change in diet, stool softener, or both.  It's only been 3 months, so re-check is in order.  Take care.....
