If the problem is spasms, the condition is called SOD - sphincter of Oddi dysfunction. It's diagnosed via ERCP with manometry. If pressures are raised in the duct, the condition is then termed SOD. Depending on what 'form' of SOD a person has, it may or may not be helped by making a cut in the sphincter. If the condition is SOD, you should be working with a doc experienced in SOD - not all docs are.
