I have had Irritable bowel for 30 plus years - I am 52. Current meds include 2 500 mg of Azulfidine 2 times, 150 mg of zantac - 2 times, 50 mg of elavil (generic), and 1 immodium. Also take 2 Fibercom pills 2 times.
In January 2008, had a bad cold - followed by sinus swelling
at teaching hospital - said I did not have LPR after scope - put me on mucinex and allegra - did nothing but give me a headache. Went back to him and he put my on Avolex for a sinus infection I did not have (proven by CT scan of my sinuses). Then I started to have a sour bitter acid taste in my mouth - mostly after I eat.
Went back to him - he suggested Sjogren's syndrome - blood tests came back negative.
Went to my 3rd ENT at teaching hospital - scoped me and said it did not present as LPR (sent me to the Penn taste and smell center for 7 hours of taste - no problems with taste and smell - suggested that Avolex could cause this reaction) Also went to Penn oral medicine department - said no problems but maybe a reaction to elavil - 3rd ent put me on prilosec - 20 mg 2 times - was on for a month - symptoms continued to get worse - ordered me off meds for 1 week and did a 24 hour PH test - showed I reflux at night but not during thd day when I have symptoms - now from the the time I wake until Im go to bed - sour acid bitter creamy gooey taste in my mouth - all the time - worse after I eat - gets worse a day goes on - sometimes get a sore throat - get some relief from chewing gum but end s up causing a sore throat. 3rd ent suggested I try prevacid - 30 mg 2 times - was on for a month and did nothing.
Last week went back to my GI doctor - he did another endoscopy - clean as a whistle. Family doctor switched me to Nexium 40 mg 2 times. No relief - just getting worse.
I am having another GI consult this week - can any of the medications I am taking cause this horrible rancid taste in my mouth? If Elavil can be a cause (I have been taking for 7 years) - how do you wean yourself off - what other drug has the same effect on the 5hp3 receptors in your brain with a spill over effect into your gut (also the anticholonergic response). What about azulfidine - I have been taking for 30 plus years - (Asacol or Pentasa). My system is hypersensitive - what does not effect others great impacts me - for instance I had a colonoscopy 7 years ago and the result was for 6 months I felt like my insides were coming out - just tremendous spasms - that is when I went on elavil.
Surprising thing is that during this whole process my stomach and bowels have been relatively good.
I am doing everything possible lifestyle wise - no eating after dinner, I am not overweight, no caffeine, chocolate, citrus fruit, no smoking, no alcohol - bed wedge etc.
