Perhaps I can partially answer your question - about five years ago I underwent a total colectomy for torrential diverticular bleeding and, in response to a question from another Medhelp patient, I shared my own experiences on:-

My surgery was the ileorectal anastomosis (i.e. joining the remote end of the ileum to the top of the rectum).  I did not undergo removal of the rectum so my surgery/experience may be somewhat different from what you described in the heading of your posting.
