Allergy to ATS valve

by Jim Ellison, Dec 30, 1999 12:00AM
Is there any research on, or scientific understanding of, a person's possibly having an allergic reaction to an ATS valve? I am scheduled to have one put in me in January to replace my aortic valve? I have a friend who knew someone who had an allergic reaction to a metal shoulder replacement and had a wide range of problems because of it. I am allergic to milk, dogs, cats, and other things. I understand the valve is made of titanium and platinum. How 'bout potential allergies and is there a way to test for that?

I havent't heard of anyone having an allergic reaction to a heart valve.  I suppose you could see an allergist (board certified MD, not a 'naturalist') ahead of time and have patch testing for the types of metal in the valve you will be receiving.
