Allergy to Iodinated contrast media

Allergy to Iodinated contrast media

My wife has a heart problem and both our local cardiologist and primary care physician believe a coronary artery angiogram is the appropriate next step. Unfortunately she has a past history of an anaphylactoid reaction to iodinated contrast media, even though she received prophylactic treatment with steroids and antihistamines.
Are any contrast media available that do not contin idine?

WE believe that my wife should be seen by a cardiologist with extensive experience dealing with patients having allergies to the contrast media but our primary care physician does not have the resources to find out where such expertise is available. What is the most effective way for us to find an appropriate cardiologist?

Dear zephyr,
Yes, there are non-ionic contrasts available.  However, your wife should still be pre-medicated.  Any cardiologist at a high volume center will have experience with dealing with contrast reactions.  This is something we routinely see at the Cleveland Clinic and it can usually be managed without difficulty. If you would like to be seen at the Cleveland Clinic I would recommend Dr. Fred Heupler.  He is an expert in the area of contrast reactions.  You can make an appointment with him by calling the number below.  Best wishes.
