High heart rate related to beta blocker withdrawl(withdrawal)?

I have been taking atenolol 50mg for high blood pressure for the last
2 years. I got my lifestyle under control (weight loss and exercise)
and asked the doctor to take me off the medication (other reasons too,
many bad side affects). The doctor told me to expect a higher heart
rate for 2 weeks or so. It is now going on 6 weeks and I feel my heart
rate is still to high (resting 85-95). I also now have problems keeping
my rate within the guidelines while excersizing (gets up to 180 within
3-4 minutes of beginning cardio workout). By the way I'm a 44 year old
male. I know my heart rate was really low while I was on the atenolol
so maybe I'm just not used to it. Additionally, I have occassional
palpitations when my rate is up towards 100. Please tell me what you
think.
