Is it possible to be infected with Coxsackie virus because of being exposed to burst waste pipe in work environment?

About a month or more ago, my workplace had a burst waste pipe which flooded certain office areas.  The cleanup effort included fans to disperse some chemical that was used by a professional disaster waste cleanup.  During cleanup, I developed eye pains and subsequently a strange non-cancerous lesion in eyelid along with bumps/blisters inside eyelids.  Shortly thereafter, my 2-year old son was diagnosed (for other reasons) with coxsackie virus (intestinal problems, cold symptoms, sore mouth).  My husband also came down with intestinal symptoms afterwards.  I have noticed in the past few days that I am having occasional heart pains, which is causing me some concern.  I also have a cold and cough, which seem unrelated.

Is the problem with my eyes coxsackie virus?  My eye doctor could not confirm.  Should I be truly concerned about the chest pains?  I am an otherwise healthy 39 year old woman with great blood pressure.

Please advise.

I'm sorry to hear you're having some difficulty.  Coxsackie virus can certainly cause ocular problems and cardiac problems, such as myopericarditis (inflammation of the heart).  It can also cause a condition called pleurodynia, which is spasm of the chest and abdominal muscles.  However, Coxsackie virus can also be very benign. I'm not sure what chemical was used to clean your office but I would look to that as a culprit as well.  You may be having worsening coronary artery disease, though I think this is less likely.  At the least, if you are having chest pain, you deserve evaluation by a physician and an ECG ASAP.

Best of luck.
