Low pulse

Low pulse

I am 66, in good health and very active as singles tennis player, soccer official, baseball umpire, basketball referee. My pulse has been approximately 60  until recently when it ranges between 48 and 58. I recently had mild anethesia while undergoing colonoscopy and registered a pulse of 36 to 38. A follow-up  holtor monitor showed results in the 50's with some in the 40's without indicating the total number.  My internist recommended seeing a cardiologist with the possibility of a pacemaker being prescribed. Does apacemaker seem indicated at this point?

Your pulse is low and since it is new, you should see a cardiologist for analysis of just what your heart rhythm is. If your heart rhythm is normal, but the rate is just low, you do not need a pacemaker unless you are having symptoms from the low rate or if you are unable to increase the rate with exercise. However, for certain abnormal rhythms, pacemaker implantation is recommended even if you are not currently having symptoms.
