Mitral valve repair

Mitral valve repair

I was wondering if having a sunken sternum would make me ineligible for the minimally invasive mitral valve repair. I am 26 year old female with severe mitral regurgitation but I also have an anatomical defect and my sternum is sunken in. Looking at the diagrams of the procedure doesn't appear that it would work.

Alisonleeka,

Patients being evaluated for minimally invasive surgeries frequently require both echocardiograms and CT scans of the chest to determine whether the anatomy will be conducive. In the end, it is the decision of the surgeon who will make the final decision. I would advise that you seek care at a center which performs a high volume of minimally invasive surgery and more importantly has good outcomes.

Hope that this helps.
