Dear Laurie, thank you for your question. Atenolol is a beta blocker that can be used to treat high blood pressure and fast or irregular heart rhythms (tachycardias). I don't think the Atenolol caused your mother to develop swelling and high blood pressure. I'm not sure from your message what type of tachycardia your mother has, but atenolol is usually a good treatment. I hope your mother discussed the discontinuation of her atenolol with her physician before she stopped the medication since there can be side effects from stopping beta blockers. Overall, I think she needs a thorough reevaluation of her blood pressure and tachycardia.
