My mother was diagnosed with Tachycardia and given Atenolol for the condition.  Since then she has felt very bad.  She has been to doctor after doctor who all tell her that is in her mind.  Well this is so much not in her mind when her body starts to swell and her blood pressure goes sky high. She stopped taking the medication (gradually) she is not completely off of it.  The swelling has reduced.  I read all the symtoms and none of them including swelling or high blood pressure but rather low blood pressure.  I would appreciate some information on this.  Thank you.

Dear Laurie, thank you for your question.   Atenolol is a beta blocker that can be used to treat high blood pressure and fast or irregular heart rhythms (tachycardias).  I don't think the Atenolol caused your mother to develop swelling and high blood pressure.  I'm not sure from your message what type of tachycardia your mother has, but atenolol is usually a good treatment.  I hope your mother discussed the discontinuation of her atenolol with her physician before she stopped the medication since there can be side effects from stopping beta blockers.  Overall, I think she needs a thorough reevaluation of her blood pressure and tachycardia.
I hope you find this information useful.  Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only.  Only your physician can provide specific diagnoses and therapies. Please feel free to write back with additional questions.
