My 23-year-old daughter has been diagnosed with POSSIBLE MVP.  She had an EKG in the doctor's office which was normal and there was no 'click' when her heart was checked with a stethascope.  She has a history of anxiety stress disorder and panic attacks and has been off Prozac for over two years.  The echocardiogram is a very expensive test for someone with no insurance. (She is a student and has just been dropped from my policy.)  Are there other tests she can take beforehand that are cheaper that could give us a lead on whether she really has this problem?  There is a great deal of stress in her life right now and with her history, I am more apt to think she is suffering through her panic attacks again, but also feel she needs reassurance.  One hospital recommended the Holter Monitor.  Is this going to show anything?  Should the EKG have shown something abnormal or was this another unnecessary test?

You pose an "either/or" question that I think can not be answered necessarily
by an "either/or" answer. I'm not a doctor, by the way... just for
the record. Anyway, your daughter may well be suffering from panic
attacks AND she may have MVP or MVPS. Panic disorder is associated wtih
MVP/MVPS, although it is my understanding that, to date, there is no
direct causal relationship between the two that has been scientifically
established. Theoretically, it makes sense, however, if you realize
that panic disorder is thought by many researchers now to have a
biological basis or component. You can see where a person with MVPS, suffering
from dysautonomia ( think of that as a blood pressure system with the
wrong numbers plugged in somehow.... causing it to go up when it should go
down and to go down when it should go up...) and palpitations could be panicky.  You can see
also where someone with panic disorder, spilling out a lot of PVC
producing excess catecholemines could have MVP symptoms.
I hope you will encourage your daughter to be checked out thoroughly  -- for
whatever could be causing her panic symptoms ( has her thyroid been checked?)
as well as having her checked and treated for panic disorder.
Again, this is not an opinion of a medical person --- although I do know something
about medicine from my profession.
Good luck to you and your daughter --- S.
