I am a 50 year old female recently diagnosed with a right atrial myxoma.  Among my many questions, I wanted to know if there are any alternatives to open heart surgery.  Does the Cleveland Clinic have heart surgeons who are experienced in performing this surgery?  If I were to come to the Cleveland Clinic, how long should I be prepared to stay in the area including pre-surgery and recovery time?

Dear Judith, thank you for your question.   There are no alternatives to open heart surgery to remove an atrial myxoma.  Our cardiac surgeons are among the best in the world and they have extensive experience in removing cardiac myxomas and other intracardiac masses.  Typically, your pre-operative evaluation would take 2-3 days and your post-operative recovery time would be 5-7 days in the hospital and 2-3 days in the area immediately after discharge before going home.  To schedule a surgical date, I suggest that you or your cardiologist call 1-800-CCF-CARE and ask for the cardiac surgery scheduling office.  The process would be expedited if your cardiologist made the referral directly.  Good luck!
