i recently made a trip to an emergency room due to mild chest pain and what felt like an irregular heart rate and they performed an ekg on me and said everything looked good. while at my doctor's office on friday i had a chance to look at the ekg results, it said "irregular sinus bradycardia." my doctor listened to my hearbeat and said the heart rate change upon inhalation is an arrythmia which is normal in young healthy hearts. but at the emergency room the doctor listened to my heart rate and said my heart rate sounded variable. since then i've noticed my heart rate seems to vary in speed from time to time as well as speeding up when breathing in. and i've continued to have some off and on mild chest pain. i've also noticed i seem to get slightly winded easier than i think i should. i'm scheduled to see a cardiologist on june 15. what is a irregular sinus bradycardia?

Dear rae,
You have noticed what is called heart rate variability.   This is the normal variance of the heart rate with breathing and is actually a good thing to have more of.  Irregular just means the rate is changing and sinus bradycardia means it is slow.
I hope you find this information useful.  Information provided in the heart forum is for general purposes only.  Only your physician can provide specific diagnoses and therapies.  Please feel free to write back with additional questions.

a couple of questions. from what i've been able to find, a bradycardia is a slow heart rate, somewhere below 60 beats per minute. my ekg said "irregular sinus bradycardia." when i've checked my resting heart rate it has pretty consistently been in the 70's, occasionally in the 80's or 60's. but i've never noticed it being lower than that.would the "irregular sinus bradycardia" indicate a pulse below 60 bpm? and how much variation is normal in your resting heart rate?
